Warm and Heartfelt Parent-Child Reading Activity Held! I Am a Short-EaredRabbit Encourages Children to Embrace Self-Acceptance
To promote communication and understanding between parents and children, the
Taiwan Precision Child Health Association invited Dr. Wan-Ting Hsu, the
ambassador for promoting parent-child reading, to conduct a trial parent-child reading
event. The picture book I Am a Short-Eared Rabbit was carefully selected for this
session.
The story’s protagonist is a unique rabbit with short ears, unlike the long-eared rabbits
everyone usually imagines, which often makes it feel unhappy. During the reading
session, Dr. Wan-Ting not only narrated the story vividly but also used humour to
guide the children in thinking about the meaning of beauty and how to accept
themselves.
“The kids really made me feel proud today! Not only did they listen attentively, but
they also responded quickly to my questions every time, giving me a great sense of
accomplishment!” Dr. Wan-Ting enthusiastically shared after the event. “The
relationship between parents and children is like a ping-pong game—give and take,
question and answer. Through this interaction, children become brave in expressing
themselves, receiving praise and encouragement for correct answers, and not being
punished for mistakes. This trust and rapport don’t happen overnight; they are
gradually built through continuous practice and effort.”
During the event, parents and children shared their thoughts on the “short-eared
rabbit,” creating a lively and warm atmosphere. Participating parents also felt that this
reading activity was not only an opportunity to read but also a beautiful moment of
intimate interaction. Through the guidance provided, parents understood how to use
question-and-answer interactions in daily life to enhance trust with their children and
deeply realized the importance of encouraging their children to express themselves.

“Our responsibility is to help parents or caregivers develop this ability to accompany
and communicate, making picture books a bridge between parent and child,” Dr.
Wan-Ting further explained. “During the reading process, parents and children can
enjoy precious moments of companionship, and this understanding will encourage
children to share with their parents whenever they face any issues.” Dr. Pen-Hua Su,
the chairperson of the Taiwan Precision Child Health Association, strongly affirmed
the importance of parent-child reading for children’s development. She noted that
modern parents are often busy with work and may have limited time with their
children, but reading together can improve the quality of their interactions and
companionship.
The I Am a Short-Eared Rabbit reading event concluded successfully, not only
strengthening the emotional bond between parents and children but also helping
parents better understand their children’s inner world. Dr. Wan-Ting Hsu, who has
long been committed to promoting parent-child reading, has also curated a new
reading list, believing that each parent-child reading session will bring new
inspiration, making reading a bridge for parent-child connection as they enjoy the
journey of growth together!
